Sqealing noise

MessageAuthor

Hi, Just discovered the forums are back up and running :D As some of you know I had my engine replaced by Volvo last December (1.8 petrol), and I've really had no problems since (done 12k miles on the new engine now without touching a drop of oil). The only slight niggling thing is that it's developed a sqealing noise, most noticeable for the first minute after a cold start, but also when I've just washed the car or if it's rained recently. I think this is probably a worn auxiliary belt, but would they really put the old belt back on the new engine? The car has done 43,000 miles now, so if it is the old belt then I guess it's probably time for a change. Is there anything else that could cause this kind of noise? Also, one of my engine mounts sqeaks everytime I touch the accelerator, and I can't find which one. Silly little problems I know but any advice on where to look would be great :) Cheers Matt

Is that the same as the alternator / aux belt?

My 3 year old 1.8 V50 does it every time we have heavy rain and I start it from cold. It sounds like an old banger for 10-15 seconds. I've had the belts checked three times by the dealers who say belt and tension is fine. Guess it's what they call a 'characteristic'!!

I had a high pitched squeal when I first started my V70 T5, and I tried most things to see if I could stop it, but one day I had the power steering rack changed, and it stopped, so I came to the conclusion that it was back pressure coming back through the steering fluid reservoir and pump, which sounds silly, but it was pressurised. Andy..
